Madam Pele'
43-1/2" wide by 35" long
I made this quilt after a recent trip to the big island of Hawaii. We thought to see an active volcano, but saw only the fields of black lava. I found all that black rock to be slightly disturbing. In my mind's eye, I saw the red hot core that lava had been in it's flowing state. We also climbed waterfalls and saw the lush Hilo side of the island.
The background of this quilt is a piece of hand dyed fabric with the flowers and leis appliqued to it. The leis are embellished with machine and hand embroidery including French knots and flowers. The orchids and lilies are heavily embroidered as well. The quilting is done in foliage designs, reflecting those ferns and plants I saw climbing the waterfalls near Hilo.
